Wine and cheese picnics have become more popular as couples are once again discovering how incredibly romantic a simple picnic for two can be. The initial cost for a beautiful willow or bamboo classic basket is less than dinner for two at a restaurant and can be used again and again and again.
A basic Wine and Cheese Basket or Backpack or Tote contains a cheese board and knife, an insulated wine bottle holder and a corkscrew. In addition to basic service some baskets also have wine glasses, a bottle stopper and napkins. Other styles will include plates and utensils which is closer to a traditional picnic pack that also has cheese and/or wine service.
Food for a Wine and Cheese Picnic is not meant to be fussy. Some cheese, a small loaf of crusty bread or rolls and a little fruit is more than enough. But I like to add a couple pieces of chocolate as a little extra treat. The best thing about any picnic is there are no rules about what food you have to take, where you have to picnic or what you have to drink. It really is, take what you like.
In the summer, my husband and I like to take our wine and cheese basket to the weekly concert at the park. Because alcoholic beverages are not allowed we get a nonalcohol bottle of wine. With or without alcohol, to me, sitting under the stars, listening to music and drinking a glass of wine with someone special is always romantic.
Other regular outings we enjoy in the summer is the farmer’s market. We take our basket, a bottle of wine and buy fresh fruit and bread from the vendors. One of our favorite places to picnic is across the street by the river although there are several other places where we like to picnic depending on how we want to spend the rest of the afternoon.
Taking our lightly packed basket with us when we go out for the day, gives us the opportunity to be spontaneous. If we don’t have a specific destination, we’ll put a thermos of coffee or ice tea in the insulated wine sack. On one such outing we rented a canoe to explore a marsh. It was so simple and fun we have continued to go to the marsh at least once every spring or summer.
None of us are immune from the stresses of life, even during happy occasions such as a wedding or graduation. Our simple outings, away from electronics (we turn off our cell phones) and family responsibilities have helped us keep in touch with each other and what is important to us. And yes, our wine and cheese outings are still, simply romantic.
